Family Feud Erupts Over “Wizard of Arcella” Estate

The Bitter Battle for a Magician’s Millions

The inheritance of Antonio Battista, widely known as the “Wizard of Arcella,” a charismatic figure who graced Italian television screens on shows like the Maurizio Costanzo Show and the Sanremo Festival, has ignited a fierce legal battle among his children. Battista, who passed away on July 14, 2012, at the age of 82, amassed a considerable fortune through real estate ventures, particularly in the Frascati region of the Castelli Romani. This wealth has now become the focal point of a protracted and acrimonious dispute between his children from different marriages.

A Legacy of Land and Legal Wrangling

At the heart of the conflict lies the ownership of key properties, including land on the Tuscolana where battista constructed a villa in the 1970s, affectionately known as the “cottage,” and the “white castle,” held by the Clark group. These assets are central to the ongoing civil trials that have divided the family.

The €25 Million question: allegations of Asset Diversion

Gloria Battista, daughter from Antonio’s first marriage, claims that she has been deprived of assets worth an estimated €25 million. She alleges that her half-siblings, giovanni and Antonella, children from Battista’s second marriage and later adopted by him, failed to remit rental income from the “Bianco Castello” premises and proceeds from its subsequent sale. Gloria contends that these revenues were withheld due to the brothers’ alleged transfer of property ownership in Frascati before their father’s death, effectively excluding those assets from the inheritance. This mirrors similar cases where disputes over estate planning lead to complex legal challenges, as highlighted in a 2024 report by the European Law Institute on cross-border inheritance disputes.

Legal Challenges and Contentions

One key point of contention involves the validity of the separation agreement between Antonio Battista and his second wife, wich resulted in the transfer of land and properties. While a judge initially sided with Gloria, her appeal was triggered by the lack of specific property identification. A separate case, concerning the transfer of properties from the municipality to the two brothers, is currently awaiting a public hearing before the court of Cassation, Italy’s highest court of appeal. This highlights the complexities of Italian inheritance law, where family dynamics and property rights frequently enough intertwine, leading to protracted legal battles.
