Powerful Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Strikes Eastern Mindanao, Felt Across Visayas

A significant seismic event struck General Luna in Surigao del Norte early Saturday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). This magnitude 5.6 earthquake, centered east of General Luna, triggered alarm throughout the region and neighboring areas.

Earthquake Details: Magnitude and Depth

The earthquake was initially reported at magnitude 5.7 with a depth of 40 kilometers at 2:43 a.m. PHIVOLCS later adjusted its report to a magnitude 5.6 with a focal depth of 51 kilometers, occurring slightly earlier at 2:42 a.m.

No Structural Damage Reported, But Aftershocks Expected

Thankfully, the earthquake did not cause any structural damage in the affected areas. However, PHIVOLCS advised residents to remain cautious and prepared for possible aftershocks.

Reported Intensities Widespread Across Regions

The earthquake was felt in various municipalities across Surigao del Norte with Intensity IV reported in Surigao City, General Luna, Del Carmen, San Isidro, Dapa, Claver, and Placer. This strong shaking was also reported in several areas of Surigao del Sur, including Tandag City, Carrascal, Cantilan, Madrid, Carmen, Lanuza, Cortes, Tago, Bayasbas, Cagwait, and San Miguel.

Intensity III was recorded in Butuan City, and several locations in Dinagat and Dinagat Islands, specifically Dinagat City, Cagdianao, San Jose, and Basilisa. It was noted as Intensity II in Libjo, Tubajon, and Loreto in Dinagat Islands, and in Silago, Hinunangan, San Juan, Anahawan, Libagon, and Hinindayan in Southern Leyte. Cagayan de Oro City in Misamis Oriental also felt the effects at Intensity II. Bislig City in Surigao del Sur experienced the quake at Intensity I.

Instrumental Intensities Show Broader Reach

Instrumental intensity records, which offer a more precise measurement using accelerometers, unveiled a broader impact area. Intensity III was recorded in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur. Intensity II readings were noted in Sogod and Hinundayan in Southern Leyte; Dulag in Leyte Province; Gingoog City and Cagayan de Oro City in Misamis Oriental; and Cebu City in Cebu Province.

Lower intensities of I were recorded in Padre Burgos in Southern Leyte; Palo in Leyte; Malaybalay in Bukidnon; Nabuntaran in Davao City; and Carcar in Cebu.
