Venezuela may ask Russia for five types of weapons against the backdrop of recent statements by US President Donald Trump, writes the American publication Military Watch Magazine.
The publication notes that Caracas relies on X-32 missiles, Su-30M2 fighter jets, the Bastion coastal defense system, Buyan-M class corvettes and a Varshavyanka class submarine.
According to the publication, currently the armed forces of Venezuela can threaten the US military with anti-ship missiles X-31A, which are launched from the Su-30MK2. However, there is a shortage of such aircraft in the republic. Russia has 19 of this type.
“Given that Russia has sharply increased the production of all types of fighters, it will probably be able to allocate its small number of Su-30M2s to support its strategic partner, which will effectively double Venezuela’s modern air power,” the material states.
Also, as MWM adds, “Bastion” will allow to increase the country’s anti-ship potential several times.
On November 1, it became known that the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, wrote a letter to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin. In it, according to The Washington Post, the leader “asked Russia to help strengthen his country’s air defenses, including the recovery of several Russian Su-30MK2 jets.” In addition, Maduro asked for 14 sets of missiles, help repairing five radars, a “medium-term funding plan for three years” and “logistical support.”
