The president of France, Emmanuel Macron, reappointed Sébastien Lecornu as prime minister this Friday four days after he resigned from office after presenting the composition of his Executive amid criticism from the opposition.

“I accept, out of duty, the mission that the President of the Republic has entrusted to me to do everything possible to provide France with a budget for the end of the year and respond to the problems of the daily lives of our compatriots,” said Lecornu in a message published this Friday on social networks.

The new prime minister, whose appointment was made known through a statement issued by the Elysée, has made a call to “end this political crisis”as well as the “instability that damages the image of France and its interests.”

“The restoration of our public accounts remains a priority for our future and our sovereignty: no one can avoid this need,” he said, adding that “the new government team must embody renewal and diversity of powers.”

During the day, the French head of state had received the leaders of all political parties, except those of La Francia Insumisa (LFI) and the National Rally, in the midst of the calls from the Socialist Party, the Ecologists and the Communist Party for Macron to appoint a left-wing prime minister.

This comes after France’s acting Prime Minister Sébastian Lecornu resigned early Monday morning after admitting that “the conditions for governing are not in place” amid budget negotiations.

Macron has always defended that he will exhaust the current mandate until 2027 and has repeatedly ruled out a dissolution of the National Assembly. This is the fourth loss in his Government in just one year, after that of Gabriel Attal in September 2024, that of Michel Barnier in December of that same year and that of François Bayrou less than a month ago.
