This week, space engineers are set to launch an unprecedented mission to explore the moon. The Scientific Impact

Prof Neil Bowles, leader of the Oxford University team involved in the probe’s development, emphasizes the scientific significance of the mission. “This is primarily a scientific mission,” he explains. “It will help us understand how water is distributed and transported across the lunar surface, which has direct implications for future lunar exploration by humans.”

Previous Discoveries of Water on the Moon

Conventional wisdom once held that water molecules delivered by meteorites or comets would decompose quickly under solar radiation and drift into space. However, recent scientific missions have uncovered compelling evidence of water, primarily in the form of ice, located in perpetually shadowed craters near the moon’s poles. The lunar south pole has emerged as the most promising location for water deposits.

India’s Chandrayaan-1 probe in 2009 provided an unprecedented revelation, detecting water molecules far away from the poles. This discovery was a significant development, challenging earlier perceptions about the moon’s water content. “It was a big surprise that changed our perceptions of what we might find on the moon,” says Prof Bowles.

Technological Advances in Lunar Exploration

While Chandrayaan-1’s detection was promising, its instruments lacked the spectral range to map water comprehensively on the moon’s surface. The Lunar Trailblazer has been designed with this limitation in mind. Equipped with two advanced instruments—an infrared scanner to identify water and other geological features, and a thermal mapper that functions as a highly sensitive heat camera—this probe aims to create a detailed map of water distribution on the lunar surface.

Understanding Lunar Water Transport

Researchers are eager to understand the origin and behavior of water on the moon. Two leading theories exist: water may have been delivered by comet and meteor impacts or formed by reactions in the lunar soil. However, the mechanisms by which this water migrates and accumulates into ice deposits remain unknown.

Prof Bowles elaborates on the significance of these findings: “We are trying to understand how water moves around and builds up into ice deposits.” These insights could provide valuable information about similar celestial bodies, such as Mercury, potentially expanding our scientific understanding of the solar system.

Launch of Multiple Space Probes

The launch of Lunar Trailblazer is part of a larger mission scheduled to depart on the same day. The Falcon rocket will also carry IM-2, a lunar lander from the US-based company Intuitive Machines, designed to drill beneath the moon’s surface in search of water deposits. Additionally, another mission called Odin, crafted by AstroForge, will journey to asteroid 2022 OB5 to capture images and potential future mineral extraction sites.

NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services

These missions are part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, established to encourage private companies to send robotic spacecraft to the moon and other near-Earth destinations. The primary objective is to lay the groundwork for future human missions to the moon, fostering advancements in space exploration。
