A “blood moon” moves across the sky, but in this country it remains invisible. Thanks to live streams, you can still watch the total lunar eclipse today.

Munich – Today (March 3rd) a rare spectacle awaits sky enthusiasts: a total lunar eclipse. The moon is completely immersed in the Earth’s shadow and shines in a deep red tone – which is why it is also referred to as the “blood moon”. People in the western United States and eastern Russia have particularly good maps because the eclipse can be observed directly in the sky there. If you don’t live there, you can still follow the cosmic event – via one of the three live streams.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, earth and moon are exactly in line – and the earth casts its shadow on the moon. During a total lunar eclipse, the moon is completely immersed in the Earth’s umbra. It doesn’t just disappear into the dark, but glows in a deep red tone. The reason: Sunlight is refracted by the Earth’s atmosphere, and only the red parts of the light reach the moon – similar to the colors of a sunset, only that they can be seen on the moon’s surface.

Total lunar eclipse today: In Germany you can only observe it via live streams

The total lunar eclipse will take place during the day on March 3rd – at a time when the moon is not yet in the sky in Germany. The cosmic spectacle begins at 9:44 a.m. CET when the moon enters the Earth’s penumbra. From 10:50 a.m. the Earth’s shadow visibly moves across the lunar surface, totality begins at 12:04 p.m., and the maximum darkening is reached at 12:33 p.m. The eclipse finally ends at 3:23 p.m. In the middle of the day – and therefore invisible to observers in Germany. Here the full moon only rises after 6 p.m. on this day.

Watch the total lunar eclipse on March 3rd in a live stream – from the USA to Australia

If you still want to follow the event, you can choose between three free live streams: The Timeanddate platform shows the lunar eclipse from several locations. Recordings are planned from the New Mexico desert, Perth in Australia, Hawaii and other locations in the USA. The lunar eclipse livestream is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. CET.

The Virtual Telescope Project is based in Italy and can’t show the total lunar eclipse itself in the sky – but promises views of the eclipsed moon from various locations that can see the spectacle directly. The live stream of the total lunar eclipse is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.

Every LA tourist probably knows the famous Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles: from there you have a spectacular view of the City of Angels and also of the well-known “Hollywood” sign in the mountains. The observatory is also planning to stream the total lunar eclipse on the Internet – but only if the weather cooperates, as switching to other locations is apparently not planned.
