Two individuals have been taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation into potential manslaughter offenses at the Countess of Chester Hospital, where nurse Lucy Letby was previously convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six others.

Cheshire Police have confirmed the arrests of a male and a female, both of whom are being questioned in connection with the deaths of several infants at the hospital’s neonatal unit. The probe focuses on the actions of senior staff and administrators during the period when Letby committed her crimes.

A separate investigation was launched into the senior leadership of the hospital in 2023 after Letby was found guilty

Detective Superintendent Hughes stated that the current investigation includes examining potential offenses of corporate manslaughter, focusing on the leadership’s response to concerns raised during Letby’s tenure.

Cheshire Police are also conducting a separate investigation into the deaths and non-fatal collapses of babies at both the Countess of Chester and Liverpool Women’s Hospital, where Letby received training, with cases dating back to 2012.Det Supt Hughes noted that there are “no set timescales” for the manslaughter investigations.

Letby maintains her innocence, and her barrister, Mark McDonald, submitted an request to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) earlier this year. This application included findings from 14 medical experts who re-examined trial evidence and “concluded Letby had not harmed any babies.”

The CCRC is currently reviewing the application but has not provided a timeline for their decision. Mr. McDonald commented that the arrests occurred at a “very sensitive” time for his client’s case.

He added, “Despite this the concerns many have raised will not go away, and we will continue to publicly discuss them,” noting that “internationally renowned experts” have concluded that no babies were murdered. he also called for a new public inquiry into “failings” in neonatal and paediatric care at the Countess of Chester.

Former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has advocated for an “urgent re-examination” of Letby’s case, citing “serious and credible” questions raised by the expert panel. Sir David Davis, a Conservative Party colleague, has also supported efforts to revisit Letby’s case.

However, lawyers representing the families of letby’s victims have dismissed the expert panel’s conclusions as “full of analytical holes” and “a rehash” of the defense’s arguments.

the public inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Letby’s offenses is scheduled to release its findings in early 2026. The Thirwall Inquiry has gathered evidence from the hospital’s senior leadership team regarding when concerns were initially raised about the increase in infant deaths on the neonatal unit.
