“The new price for an 11.8kg cylinder stood at Rs2,838.31 for June against Rs2,892.91 for May, making the cylinder cheaper by Rs54.6 per kg.”

Factors Influencing LPG Prices

Ogra explained that the LPG producer price is linked to Saudi Aramco-CP rates and the US dollar exchange rate. Fluctuations in these benchmarks directly impact the final price for consumers.

In the past month, the saudi Aramco CP decreased by 2.67%, while the average dollar exchange rate saw a slight increase of 0.35%. These changes combined to result in the overall decrease in LPG consumer prices.

Government Efforts to Combat Illegal Activities

The government is also taking steps to address illegal activities within the petroleum sector. The National Assembly is considering the Petroleum (Amendment) Act, 2025, which aims to digitally track petroleum products from import to retail. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik is championing this bill, which seeks to amend the 1934 Petroleum Act.

The proposed law includes new clauses for IT-based tracking to curb smuggling and take action against the illegal transportation and sale of petroleum products, as well as illegal petrol pumps. The government estimates that smuggling and adulteration cause revenue losses of Rs300-500 billion annually, in addition to environmental damage and harm to vehicle engines.

In related news, eight units involved in the illegal sale of LPG cylinders were recently shut down and fined Rs5,000.
