Despite three decades of progress in reducing low birthweight cases across India, a recent study published in BMJ Global Health reveals that rates remain considerably elevated in specific regions. The research highlights that the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, and West Bengal collectively account for nearly half of all low birthweight births in the country.
Regional Disparities in Infant Health
The study underscores the persistent disparities in infant health outcomes across different states in India. While national averages have improved, these four states continue to struggle with disproportionately high rates of low birthweight, indicating the need for targeted interventions and resources.
Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, and West Bengal account for almost half of all such births.
Factors Contributing to Low Birthweight
Several factors contribute to the prevalence of low birthweight, including maternal health and nutrition, access to prenatal care, socioeconomic conditions, and environmental factors. Addressing these multifaceted challenges is crucial for improving birth outcomes in these high-burden states.
