According to the indictment paperwork filed in the 19th JDC,
Count 1: Between 2012 and 2025, the defendant, Clay John Schexnayder, knowingly and intentionally committed theft of a rare Louisiana state artifact, belonging to another, without their consent, or by means of fraudulent conduct, practices, or representations, having a value of $25,000 or more; and
Count 2: Between 2012 and 2025, the defendant, Clay John Schexnayder, committed malfeasance in office by intentionally refusing to perform a duty required of him as a public officer or employee.
Schexnayder was stunned on the phone when WAFB reached out to him about the indictment.
In response, he told Channel 9, “I left the board and computer stuff there for the state to pick up. I left it there like any representative does. What happened to it – I don’t know.”
Attorney General Liz Murrill shared a simple statement about the indictment: “You don’t get to keep State property, it doesn’t belong to you,” she said.
“I’m willing to work with them to find it, but there has only been one phone call with the Attorney General’s office,” said Schexnayder. “I’m very shocked and would have thought they would have followed up with me or had a sit-down meeting. I told them I was willing to help them find it, but there’s been no follow-up.”
