Los Ríos Region Invests in soil Fertility Program to Boost Agricultural Productivity

Revitalizing Agriculture: A New Initiative for Los Ríos

The los Ríos region is embarking on an enterprising journey to enhance agricultural productivity through the “Support for the Betterment of Fertility in Productive Agricultural Systems Region” program. This initiative, backed by meaningful funding from the Regional Government via the National Regional Advancement Fund (FNDR), aims to address critical soil fertility issues impacting local farmers and indigenous communities.

Launched on April 11th, the program was inaugurated by Regional Governor Luis cuvertino and Seremi of Agriculture Jorge Sánchez, alongside senator Iván Flores and representatives from various public agencies, farmer associations, Mapuche communities, and research institutions. The University’s Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, represented by Dean Dr. Carolina Lizana, also voiced strong support, emphasizing the program’s potential to bolster the sector amidst the challenges of climate change affecting livestock and milk production.

Financial Backing and Beneficiaries

With a substantial investment of $1.232 billion pesos from the FNDR, the program is set to benefit approximately 400 producers in 2025, with a similar number expected to receive support in 2026. This financial commitment underscores the region’s dedication to strengthening its agricultural base and ensuring long-term food security.

Two-Pronged Approach: Funding and Education

The two-year program is structured around two key components designed to provide thorough support to farmers:

Competitive Funding for Soil Improvement

A competitive fund will offer financial assistance for implementing soil improvement practices. This includes:

  • Incorporating phosphorated base fertilizers
  • adding essential chemical elements such as lime, potassium, and sulfur
  • Establishing vegetable covers to regenerate soil

This component encourages the adoption of innovative technologies and methodologies to optimize soil quality and productivity, directly addressing the challenges faced by farmers in maintaining fertile land.

Empowering Farmers Through Training and Technological Transfer

Recognizing that knowledge is as crucial as financial aid, the program includes a robust training and technological transfer component. This will empower participants with the knowledge of efficient nutrient use practices, all within a framework of sustainability. This educational aspect ensures that farmers can make informed decisions about soil management and implement practices that are both productive and environmentally responsible.

Addressing Soil Degradation: A National Concern

The los Ríos initiative comes at a crucial time, as soil degradation poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity worldwide. According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification,

“up to 40% of the planet’s land is degraded, affecting half of humanity, and the number and duration of droughts has increased by 29% since 2000.”

Programs like this are essential to combat these trends and ensure sustainable agricultural practices.

Looking Ahead: Sustainable Agriculture for the future

By promoting responsible resource management and prioritizing both agricultural productivity and environmental conservation, the “Support for the Improvement of Fertility in Productive Agricultural Systems Region” program sets a precedent for sustainable agriculture in the Los Ríos region. This initiative not only addresses immediate needs but also lays the foundation for a resilient and thriving agricultural sector for generations to come.
