Lorient Interceltic Festival 2025: A Transatlantic Celebration of Celtic culture
Table of Contents
A Celtic Homecoming with a North American Twist
the renowned Lorient Interceltic Festival (FIL) is gearing up for its 54th edition, promising a vibrant celebration of Celtic heritage with a special focus on the “Cousins d’Amérique.” From August 1st to 10th, 2025, the festival will transform Lorient into a hub of music, dance, and cultural exchange, highlighting the enduring connections between Celtic nations and their diaspora in the Americas.
A Diverse Lineup of Celtic and American Talent
Festival-goers can anticipate a rich tapestry of performances, blending conventional Celtic sounds with contemporary influences. Beloved festival staples such as the Triumph of Ringers and the Grate Parade of Celtic Nations will return, alongside captivating shows by the Bagadoù (Breton pipe bands). This year, the Bagadoù competition takes a break, replaced by a special performance at the Moustoir stadium.
Iconic Celtic artists like Alan Stivell, Nolwenn Korbell, Startijenn, and the Bagad of Lann-Bihoué are slated to grace the stage. Adding a fresh dimension to the festival, the “L’Omo elect” event on Saturday, August 9th, will feature a dynamic lineup of Breton and Irish acts, including Quebecoise Mélisande, the Yard Irlandaus, the Submarine Prøject collective, and the Tek mao group.
This is a great first, we innovate on the last festival weekend with six hours of non-stop music with different Breton and Irish training. There is a whole age group that has all these codes, we said to ourselves why not!
Jean-Philippe Mauras, Artistic Director, Lorient Interceltic festival
Mauras’s statement underscores the festival’s commitment to embracing new audiences and showcasing the evolving landscape of Celtic music.
Spotlight on the “Cousins of America”
The festival’s dedication to its American theme shines through in the “Cousins of America” evening on Friday, August 1st, at the Palais des Congrès. The duo from Newfoundland and Labrador, Port-aux-Poutines, and Acadian violinist Dominique Dupuis will headline the event. They join previously announced acts such as Lynda Lemay, the Canadian punks of The Real McKenzies, Quebec’s North Wind, Philadelphia’s Irish band Solas, and the Bagad of New York.
This focus on North american artists reflects the meaningful impact of Celtic immigration on the continent. Such as, Irish immigration to the United States in the 19th century led to the widespread adoption of Celtic musical traditions, wich continue to thrive in cities like Boston and New York. Similarly, Scottish Gaelic culture has left an indelible mark on communities in Canada, particularly in nova Scotia.
