As virtual reality (VR) continues to evolve, scientists and engineers are pushing the boundaries to incorporate even more realistic elements into the VR experience. One promising innovation comes from a team of biomedical engineers at the City University of Hong Kong, who have developed a lollipop-shaped device designed to simulate taste in VR environments.

While the concept of licking a device might seem unusual, it represents a practical compromise to the limitations of mixing real physical sensations with virtual environments. The engineers at the City University of Hong Kong have crafted a device that uses specialized gels to simulate a variety of flavors, offering a glimpse into the future of immersive technology.

The Technology Behind VR Taste Simulation

The VR Lollipop consists of nine gel pouches, each designed to produce distinct flavors when activated. These gels are made from red algae, which respond to electrical stimulation by releasing flavors when licked. By varying the voltage applied to each gel, engineers can control the strength and intensity of the taste experienced. However, the design’s current implementation limits each flavor to a one-hour duration.

The flavors currently offered include salt, sugar, milk, cherry, citric acid, green tea, passion fruit, grapefruit, and the infamous durian. This eclectic mix demonstrates the versatility of this innovative device, paving the way for further flavor expansion.
