Big Book Drive Ignites Young Readers’ Imaginations in South Florida

The tenth annual Big Book Drive commenced this Wednesday, bringing the joy of reading to children across South florida. Eric Yutzy, the drive’s presenter, visited Sweetwater primary school in Miami-Dade County, where eager students awaited new books.
Before arriving at the school, Yutzy adn Mayte padrón, the Director of Community relations, traveled approximately 50 miles south to Cayo Largo to distribute the first set of books. This effort aims to promote literacy throughout the tri-county area.
over 200 excited young readers in Key Largo received books as part of the Big Book Drive. When asked about her love for reading, Sofía López, a third-grade student, shared, “Because you have to read books that you love and take you to adventures to anywhere you want to go.”
Sofia was among the pre-K-4 students who had the opportunity to select books for summer reading. Padrón asked, “Do you read it right now or are you going to wait for summer to arrive?” One girl responded, “Read it immediately.”
The Key Largo school was chosen to be a recipient of this year’s Big Book Drive. The initiative serves schools from Monroe counties to Broward,and has distributed over 154,000 new books to children,encouraging them to explore the world of literature.
James Navarro, a first-grade student, reads at a sixth-grade level. Darren Pais, the director of the Key Largo school, stated, “We have a literacy culture. It is indeed a topic throughout the district,and here we take it very personal. As children know, I go to the classrooms and read every Friday.”

The Big Book Drive aims to bring happiness to children in southern Florida through literacy. The initiative also visited Driftwood Elementary School in Hollywood and Vera Cadillac in Pembroke Pines this Wednesday.
