Lizzy Caplan Untangles the Complex Character of Alexandra Mullen in Netflix’s “Zero Day”

SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers from all six episodes of “Zero Day,” now streaming on Netflix.

Lizzy Caplan, known for her nuanced roles, delves into the morally complex world of Netflix’s latest political thriller, Zero Day. In the series, she portrays Alexandra Mullen, a Congresswoman and former First Daughter who orchestrates a catastrophic cyberattack alongside other high-level politicians. Caplan provides an insight into the character’s ideology, motivations, and her emotionally charged relationships, especially with her father, President Robert Mullen, played by Robert De Niro.

“When I learned about Alex’s villainy, I think it was before I read the scripts,” Caplan reflects. “I was aware that she was behind the Zero Day attack, but I didn’t fully grasp the extent of her involvement. Initially, I thought other people might be involved as well.” This complexity in Alex’s character is crucial to the plot’s twist that unfolds in the finale.
