Montavista’s Battery Breakthrough: Powering the Future of Electric Aviation

Revolutionizing electric Flight with Advanced Battery Technology

At the Aero Friedrichshafen Aviation Industry Expo, Montavista Energy Technologies Corporation (Anhui), a key player in electric aviation battery technology, unveiled groundbreaking performance data for its Metary® P lithium metal battery (LMB). The tests, conducted using a flight profile supplied by leading EVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) manufacturers, demonstrated the battery’s remarkable cycling capabilities and energy density retention.

Unprecedented Cycle Life and Energy Density

The Metary® P battery achieved over 1280 cycles while maintaining an impressive 99% capacity, all while boasting an energy density of 400 Wh/kg. This combination of high energy density and extended cycle life is crucial for the commercial viability of electric aircraft. High energy density translates to longer flight ranges, while a long cycle life substantially reduces operational costs by maximizing battery reuse.

Currently, the average cycle life for manny commercially available lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles ranges from 500 to 1000 cycles. montavista’s achievement surpasses these figures, positioning the Metary® P as a potential game-changer in the electric aviation sector.

Addressing the Needs of EVTOL and Drone Applications

Montavista has strategically developed its battery technology to meet the diverse demands of the electric aviation market. In 2020, the company introduced the metary® E series LMB, featuring an ultra-high energy density of 500 Wh/kg, ideal for high-altitude platform (HAPS) applications with lower discharge rate requirements. Recognizing the need for high-power solutions, Montavista launched the Metary® P series in 2023, specifically designed for applications like EVTOLs and drones that require both high energy density and high discharge rates (above 10C).

A Breakthrough for Economical and Reliable EVTOL Operations

The enhanced cycle performance of the Metary® P battery represents a significant advancement, potentially resolving key challenges faced by EVTOL manufacturers and operators. Reliable and cost-effective operation is paramount for the widespread adoption of EVTOL technology, and Montavista’s innovation directly addresses this need.

Montavista’s Vision for a Lasting Aviation Future

During the Aero Hydrogen and Battery Summit at Aero Friedrichshafen, Montavista founder Yuegang Zhang emphasized the importance of lithium-metal cathodes in achieving the necessary energy density for pure electric aircraft. He stated that Montavista is committed to collaborating closely with customers to provide the technology needed for the aviation industry’s transition to a more sustainable future.

Montavista is focusing on providing technology to realize the eco -amiable transition of the aviation industry.
