SportsPro says…
Should the LFP get this deal over the line, it would represent a significant evolution for Ligue 1+, which is still trying to establish itself in the French broadcasting market following a series of unsuccessful media rights deals.
Ligue 1+ has enjoyed a solid if unspectacular start to life, with more than one million active subscribers. Adding additional content, especially soccer, will help that.
The World Cup could be a useful loss leader in encouraging fans to sign up and stick around, while it will also discourage some from unsubscribing during the summer months – reducing temporary churn that could become permanent.
It also raises the prospect of Ligue 1+ potentially becoming a more general soccer service – something that might allow it to grow market share and increase revenues.
