Five Licking Heights girls wrestlers went unbeaten to win individual titles Jan. 2, leading the Hornets to a runner-up team finish during the DeSales Girls Classic.
Leilah Casey won all three of her matches by first-period pin at 105 pounds, beating Mentor Lake Catholic’s Kaila Gridiron to secure her title for the Hornets, who totaled 187½ points, trailing just Delaware’s 317.
Molly Crabtree won two matches by pin and three by technical fall, beating Delaware’s Marilynn Mejeur 21-6 in the final at 110. Abigail Kalu won all five of her matches by pin, including against Fairbanks’ Hannah Niehaus in the final at 130.
Lilli Seeman won all five of her matches by pin, beating Hamilton Township’s Sophia Samczuk in the final at 155. Mariama Gaston-House won all five of her matches by pin, beating McClain’s K.C. Foster in the final at 235 for the Hornets.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lakewood edged late
Visiting Fairfield Union (7-2) charged back with a 17-2 edge in the fourth quarter, sending Lakewood to a 47-46 loss.
Lyla Brunner scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the third quarter, pushing the Lancers (5-5) to a 44-30 lead. Jaylie Maas added 9 points.
Heath falls on road
Leighton O’Reilly hit a pair of 3-pointers in a 20-point performance for Heath (2-10) during a 73-33 loss at Liberty Union (5-6).
