The Volvo car manufacturer has launched a new all-electric mid-range crossover, the EX60. This model boasts an impressive mileage forecast of up to 810 kilometers after the WLTP cycle and offers one of the longest battery warranties in its segment at 10 years. Such a promise differs from many competitors, including Tesla, where a similar warranty is often only available as an extra-cost option.
Technological innovation and performance
The Volvo EX60 is the first production Volvo electric car to be developed using gigacasting technology, a welding process that allows the creation of larger and more durable body elements. The new model is built on an 800-volt architecture that provides fast charging of up to 400 kW of power through a NACS port and access to the Tesla Supercharger charging network. Even at V4 stations, it is possible to charge up to 278 km of energy within 10 minutes. A full charge from 10% to 80% battery capacity takes just 18 minutes. In addition, the EX60 supports two-way charging with 22 kW of power, a feature that Tesla currently only offers on its Cybertruck model and only on the 11 kW power.
The basic version of the Volvo EX60 P6 is equipped with one rear-wheel drive electric motor with a power of 374 horsepower (275 kW) and a torque of 480 Nm. This configuration allows the car to accelerate to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. The energy is provided by an 83 kWh battery, which guarantees a range of up to 620 km according to the WLTP cycle. The middle configuration P10 AWD offers all-wheel drive with two electric motors, a total power of 510 horsepower (375 kW) and a torque of 710 Nm. This reduces acceleration to 100 km/h to 4.6 seconds. The battery capacity of this version has been increased to 95 kWh, and the officially declared range is 660 km. The flagship of the line is the AWD version of the Volvo EX60 P12, which has a total power of 680 horsepower (500 kW) and a torque of 790 Nm. Thanks to these parameters, the electric car can reach 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. The 117 kWh battery provides an impressive range of up to 810 km according to the WLTP standard. The maximum speed for all three versions is electronically limited to 180 km/h.
Battery warranty and safety
The P12 version of the Volvo EX60 is offered with a 10-year battery warranty, which ensures that its capacity will remain at least 515 km (320 miles) from the original mileage level. In comparison, the Tesla Model X is guaranteed 451 km (280 miles) after 8 years, while a 10-year warranty on the Model Y has recently been introduced as an additional cost option for about $2,000. The EX60 has one of the highest safety standards in its class. It features a HuginCore sensor system, a body built with gigacasting technology, and the world’s first versatile seat belt solutions.
Comfort and interior options
Comfort is provided by the adaptive air suspension, heated and ventilated seats, massage function of the front seats, electrically adjustable panoramic sunroof and Forest Light projector, which creates special light effects in the cabin. The multimedia system supports Google Gemini voice control, which allows you to communicate with the car in natural language, and Apple Music. An optional Bowers & Wilkins audio system with 28 speakers, including the headrests, offers a high-class sound experience.
Dimensions, practicality and special versions
The length of the Volvo EX60 is 4803 mm, and the wheelbase reaches 2970 mm. The car is intended for five passengers. The capacity of the luggage compartment is 523 liters, but it can be increased to 1647 liters by folding down the rear seats. An additional 85-liter compartment is located under the hood. Volvo will also offer a CrossCountry version of the EX60, which will feature increased ground clearance (by 20mm), variable height air suspension, skid plates under the body, extended wheel arches and an exclusive Forest Green paint job.
Prices and comparison with competitors
The price of the base Volvo EX60 RWD P6 is around $60,000 (€62,990). The all-wheel drive version of the P12 will cost around $70,000 (€71,990). Even in the maximum configuration, the EX60 is significantly cheaper than a comparable Tesla Model X AWD, offering more mileage, faster charging, equal dynamics, a longer battery warranty and a more luxurious interior. These advantages make the new Volvo EX60 a very attractive proposition in the premium electric car market.
