Child’s Fall from Balustrade: A Triumph of Rapid Response and Multidisciplinary Care

A young child’s severe fall was met with an exemplary display of medical teamwork, highlighting teh critical importance of rapid response and coordinated care in trauma situations.

The Incident: A Terrifying Plunge

In a harrowing incident,a child suffered a significant fall from a staircase balustrade, plummeting approximately ten meters to the ground floor. The perhaps lethal fall immediately triggered an emergency response, with rescue teams and carabinieri from the Compagnia di Legnano swiftly arriving at the scene.

Immediate Assessment and Stabilization

Dr. Matteo Lucchelli, a resuscitator from Asst Ovest Milanese, provided the initial critical assessment as part of the 112 emergency service. The child was then rushed to the emergency room at Legnano hospital, where the trauma team promptly took charge.

hybrid Room Intervention: Averting Surgery

Following a primary evaluation, the patient was quickly moved to the hybrid room. There, Dr. Carmelo Migliorisi, manager of SC Radiology Legnano, and radiologist Dr.Valerio Ferrara, performed immediate angioembolization to address a severe (IV degree) splenic lesion. This intervention successfully avoided the need for immediate surgical removal of the spleen.

Angioembolization is a minimally invasive procedure used to block blood flow to a specific area of the body. In trauma cases, it can be crucial for controlling bleeding and stabilizing patients.

The Trauma Team: A Symphony of Expertise

The Legnano hospital trauma team, under the coordination of Dr. Diego Mariani (ASD emergency and trauma surgery), demonstrated extraordinary multidisciplinary collaboration. The team included resuscitator doctors Virginia Porta and Laura colombo,Pediatrics manager Dr. Laura pogliani, Pediatric surgeon Dr. Elisa Are,and orthopedic doctor Pasquale punzetto. Their collective expertise, along with the dedicated nursing and support staff, ensured effective management of this delicate case.

Transfer to Bergamo for Specialized Care

Once the child’s condition was stabilized, they were transferred to the Pope John XXIII hospital in Bergamo on the same day for continued care. Further examination revealed a head injury (fortunately not severe), a multiple fracture of the femur, and vertebral compression fractures.

the Importance of Rapid Response in Trauma Cases

This case underscores the critical importance of rapid response and coordinated multidisciplinary care in trauma situations. According to recent studies, survival rates for children with severe injuries are significantly higher when they receive prompt and specialized treatment at trauma centers. The swift actions of the medical teams involved in this incident undoubtedly played a crucial role in the child’s stabilization and ongoing recovery.
