From Global Stages to Latvian Roots
Igor Novikov, the band’s founder and driving force, explains the motivation behind this change. The initial phase of rebel was about establishing ourselves internationally. We toured extensively, playing in America, across Europe, and even in Singapore. Now, the focus is on creating meaningful music in Latvian.
This transition reflects a desire to connect more deeply with their homeland and demonstrate the versatility of rock ‘n’ roll within the Latvian language.
This year marks the 35th anniversary of the foundation of Rebel. It couldn’t be different. I was waiting for me, my friends, family and, of course, the extensive family of Rebel’s creative lovers.
Igor Novikov, rebel’s leader and songwriter
Novikov’s journey back to Rebel was influenced by his solo work with Atis Ieviņš and Sabīne Berezine, which explored Latvian lyrics. Songs like “Trump,” “Okay, will be for you,” and “The Way of Memories” convinced him of the power of Latvian rock and inspired him to revive Rebel with a renewed purpose.
