The tension was palpable until the last second in Phoenix. In front of a white-hot audience, the Lakers almost let a comfortable lead slip away, before relying once again on their leader. LeBron James responded, both on the field and in the speech.
The match against the Suns, however, had everything of a trap scenario. Leading by twenty points at the start of the fourth quarter, Los Angeles saw Phoenix come back dangerously, carried by increasing physical intensity. At the heart of this battle, the duel between LeBron James and Dillon Brooks quickly garnered attention.
The two men never let go of each other, multiplying rough contacts, verbal provocations and stares. Nothing surprising given their common history, especially since the 2023 playoffs. Brooks, true to his reputation, sought to impose a mental fight as much as a physical one, even if it meant flirting with the limit.
An assumed rivalry and a high-pressure outcome
Asked courtside after the 116-114 victory, LeBron James delivered a meaningful response. “Nothing special, we just fight, that’s all. It’s competition. It’s the big guys’ field, it’s the NBA, no place for kids”he declared, before fully assuming the nature of the duel. A barely veiled message, addressed directly to his evening opponent.
A few minutes later, facing journalists in the corridors leading to the locker rooms, James returned more calmly to the altercation. “He’s going to fight, I’m going to fight. We’re going to get into each other, provoke each other. I try not to exceed the limit. I don’t go too far. We just played until the end.”he explained, emphasizing that intensity was an integral part of this type of encounter.
On the floor, LeBron James mainly spoke through numbers. Author of 26 points, four assists, two blocks and two interceptions, he especially made the difference in the final moments. With 3.9 seconds left, he made two crucial free throws to give the Lakers the lead again, before Marcus Smart finally sealed the success at the line.
Dillon Brooks did not finish the match. Sent off after deliberately hitting James, synonymous with a second technical foul, he left the field with 18 points, but also the image of a player who had let his emotions take over. A striking contrast to the composure displayed by his rival.
