Leapmotor Reveals Ambitious Plans to Conquer the Australian Market

At the launch of its first local offering, the C10 mid-size SUV, Leapmotor unveiled its short-term plans to secure a place among major automakers in the Australian market.

The brand aims to bolster its lineup with two new hatchbacks and a crossover, joining its recently introduced C16 large SUV and B10 small SUV.

What’s Coming to Australia?

The C10 fully electric mid-size SUV is to be joined by a range-extender hybrid variant in 2025. A battery electric version of the B10 is also scheduled for release.

The range-extender B10 hybrid is expected to be available in Australia as well, though this has not been officially confirmed. It is set to launch globally in mid-2026.

Global Launch Schedule Confirmed

In 2026, Leapmotor plans to introduce the C16 large SUV globally. Already launched in China in 2025, this SUV is available in a six-seat configuration and is speculated to have a seven-seat option for export markets, potentially competing with the Kia EV9 at a lower price point.

Also in 2026, an additional ‘C-segment’ hatchback is expected to debut—think of a Corolla-sized vehicle. This model, likely based on the B10 platform, will likely be compared to the MG4 and is targeted for a late-year reveal.

The year 2027 is earmarked for a new ‘B-segment’ crossover and hatchback, positioned just above the T03 electric city car.

What Won’t Make the Cut in Australia?

The T03 small-sized hatchback appears unlikely to be available in Australia in its current form, and the C01 sedan, currently a bestseller in China, also seems to be out of reach.

The C11 mid-size SUV, which is positioned alongside the C10 in China with added features and higher power output, will stay left-hand drive only for the foreseeable future.

Farmland to Market: Leapmotor’s Future Outlook

Leonardo Giacalone, Leapmotor International’s Head of Product and Marketing, expressed an interest in entering the commercial vehicle segment, which could include everything from cargo vans to a dual-cab ute or full-size pickup.

Giacalone mentioned that Leapmotor is exploring whether it can offer these vehicles and integrate them into its diverse lineup of passenger cars. The approach aligns with the arrival of BYD’s Shark 6, a commercial vehicle designed for export markets.

Giacalone clarifies, “Our focus is on investigating whether this can be successful. Currently, it’s not part of our product plan out to 2030, but we’re keeping our options open.” This cautious approach suggests that Leapmotor is evaluating the market needs and conditions before making a final decision.

The company also maintains a possibility of further integration with its Stellantis partner, the owner of brands like Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep. Leapmotor’s internally-developed ‘LEAP’ platform stands apart from Stellantis’s ‘STLA’ platforms, but collaborative opportunities, including platform sharing and the use of existing manufacturing facilities, are not ruled out.

Could a dual-cab configuration based on Stellantis’s SLTA-Frame platform make its debut by 2024? As with many aspects of its future strategy, only time will provide an answer.

Leapmotor Aims High by 2030

For Leapmotor, 2030 is a里程碑, setting a goal of producing 500,000 vehicles annually. The brand’s plans for Australia are carefully crafted to meet the needs of a broad range of buyers, particularly those who are making the transition from combustion vehicles to electric vehicles.

Unlike many established electric vehicle manufacturers that cater to early adopters and enthusiasts willing to pay a premium, Leapmotor aims to cater to first-time EV buyers who compare prices against traditional fossil-fuel-powered vehicles. This strategy suggests a focus on accessibility and affordability as the driving force behind its Australian market entry.

As Leapmotor and other newcomers continue to reshape the automotive landscape in Australia, the coming years will be crucial in determining their place among the established players. The company’s ambitious launch plans and open-ended outlook on potential future offerings signal a brand focused on growth and innovation.

Final Thoughts

Leapmotor’s ambitious plans for the Australian market show a strong commitment to innovation and market expansion. With a mix of electric and hybrid vehicles, and potential new entrants into the commercial vehicle segment, Leapmotor aims to cater to consumers seeking a wider range of green vehicle options at more accessible price points.

As the global automotive industry shifts towards electric vehicles, brands like Leapmotor are not only adapting to these changes but are actively driving them forward, offering alternatives that are both cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
