French NavyS New Roller Tug “Le Bécasseau” Launched in Brest

The state-of-the-art vessel will enhance naval capabilities in Toulon.

The French Navy celebrated the launch of its newest RP 10 series roller tug, “Le Bécasseau,” on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the bustling commercial port of Brest. The vessel’s construction was a collaborative effort, with initial work taking place at the Merré company workshops in Nort-sur-Erdre (Loire-Atlantique) and final assembly completed at the industrial boilermaking facility of Brittany, in Brest. Both companies are part of the BMA group.

Intended for service at the Toulon naval base, “Le Bécasseau” was carefully towed by the “lamaneurs” (dockworkers) to the second commercial port basin. From this location, it will undergo rigorous testing before its final transfer to the port of Var. “le Bécasseau” is one of 29 units ordered back in 2016, representing a critically important investment in the French Navy’s capabilities.
