Seeking National Legal Protections for Advocates

A delegation from the Pune Bar Association, led by President Adv. Hemant Zanzad, recently met with Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to address critical issues facing legal professionals. Accompanied by Pune-Nukti MP and Union minister of State Muralidhar Mohol, the delegation presented a formal request to Minister Meghwal, emphasizing the urgent need for a nationwide Lawyer’s Defense Law.

The proposed law aims to safeguard lawyers from atrocities, beatings, and injustice they reportedly face across the country.This initiative reflects a growing concern within the legal community regarding the safety and security of its members while performing their professional duties. According to a 2024 report by the International Bar Association, threats and violence against lawyers are on the rise globally, hindering access to justice and undermining the rule of law.

Infrastructure and Welfare Concerns Addressed

Beyond legal protections, the Pune Bar Association also highlighted the need for improved infrastructure to support the growing number of lawyers in Pune. MP Muralidhar Mohol pledged his support in securing resources for essential building improvements, recognizing the importance of a conducive working environment for legal professionals.

The delegation further advocated for the establishment of a High Court bench in Pune, a long-standing demand aimed at improving access to justice for residents of the region. They also urged consideration of amendments to the Advocate Act to benefit lawyers, notably junior practitioners, and requested the implementation of various welfare schemes at both the state and city levels.

Currently, many junior lawyers struggle with financial stability in their early careers.Initiatives like subsidized housing, professional development grants, and mentorship programs could significantly improve their prospects and contribute to a more equitable legal profession.

Government Response and Future Outlook

Law Minister Arjun Meghwal responded positively to the delegation’s concerns, assuring them that the proposed Lawyer’s Defense Act would be implemented nationwide as quickly as possible.He also committed to exploring avenues for providing maximum concessions to lawyers under existing and future government schemes.

The meeting represents a notable step forward in addressing the challenges faced by lawyers in Pune and across India.
