VII Regional Meeting of the Latin American Pedagogical Movement in Lima, Peru

Educators and educators of the union organizations affiliated with the International of Education Latin America (IEAL) renewed their commitment in defense of sovereign law to public education in all countries in the region; During the VII Regional Meeting of the Latin American Pedagogical Movement, held in Lima, Peru on August 21, 22 and 23.
The VII Regional Meeting of the Latin American Pedagogical Movement decidedly supported the campaign for greater financing of public education “For the public! We created school” of the International of Education, and decided to deepen the debates raised in the 59 recommendations of the United Nations for the teaching profession. Participants also supported the proposal to declare the relationship or link between teachers and students as Intangible Heritage of Humanity, in the face of the World Summit of Teachers of UNESCO, which is made in Chile on August 28 and 29.
The VII Regional Meeting of the Latin American Pedagogical Movement gathered in Peru more than 150 representatives of 22 organizations affiliated with the International of Education, from 15 countries, including the United States and Portugal.
The Unitary Union of Workers in Education of Peru (SUTEP), was the host organization of the event. The Sutep provided the space for the development of activities in conjunction with its sister sister organization, whose facilities in Asia, department of Lima, housed the people participants of the meeting. The representation of the SUTEP in the meeting was led by its secretary general Lucio Castro, together with Rosa Leyquía, Secretary of Equity and Gender and member of the Regional Committee of the IEAL and Yolanda Matos, Secretary of International Relations.
Sonia Alesso, president of the Regional Committee of the IEAL, thanked Sutep and a magisterial spill for the warm welcome in Peru and briefly reviewed the origin of the Latin American pedagogical movement.
“There in 2011 in Colombia, we raised the need that at the same time we discussed and gave the battles that we had to give salaries, for working conditions, for decent retirements, at the same time we had to generate from Latin America a pedagogical proposal. The opening political table was also made up of Roberto Leão, vice president of the Regional Committee of the IEAL and Secretary of International Relations of CNTE/Brazil and Gabriela Bonilla, regional director of the IEAL.
State, Public Education and Society
After a cultural activity with several interpretations of the magisterial spill dance group, the first panel of the meeting was made. This space had the presentation of three members of the IE World Executive Committee: Roberto Baradel de Ctera/Argentina, Evelyn Dejesus of AFT/the United States and Manuela Mendonça de Fenprof/Portugal; In addition to Miguel Ángel Pardo, Secretary of Press and Communications of FECODE/Colombia.
Manuela Mendonça reflected on the impact of neoliberal policies on the concept of teaching and education, and how they have weakened educational quality and professional autonomy. Given this scenario, he proposed to the meeting of the Latin American pedagogical movement to support the IE proposal to recognize the relationship between teachers and students as intangible or intangible cultural heritage of humanity, which will be presented at the World Summit of Teachers of UNESCO.
“Reversing the shortage of teachers implies guaranteeing labor rights and decent working conditions, respecting teachers and relying on their pedagogical knowledge, investing in professional training and development, involving teachers’ unions in the political decision through social dialogue; and also implies highlighting their fundamental role in society and recognizing the irreplaceable role of the human relationship in the teaching-learning process Artificial can replace, ”said Mendonça by explaining the proposal of the IE.
Miguel Ángel Pardo, Evelyn Dejesus and Roberto Baradel expanded information on the situation of public education in each of their countries. In the case of Colombia Pardo, he stressed that during the Petro government education has been the first investment item of the Nation General Budget for three years in a row and reforms oriented to the recovery of social rights have been promoted.
Dejesus, the first vice president of the AFT of Latin origin, reviewed the authoritarian and anti -nature measures of the Government of Republican Donald Trump, which have impacted the right to public education and particularly to migrant populations. “The Administration has focused on closing the Department of Public Education, attacking universities, dismissing public service workers, chasing immigrants, eliminating health care help for millions of people, cutting food assistance for the poor and undermining the pension system,” Dejesus denounced.
Roberto Baradel, deputy general secretary of CTERA/ARGENTINA, began his speech highlighting the mobilization of SUTEP on August 20, for decent pensions for retired teachers. Baradel marched next to the retired affiliation of SUTEP through the streets of Lima, and in his message he underlined the struggle of retired people in Argentina, who mobilize every Wednesday and are received with repression by the Government of Milei.
Freedom of association and democracy in Latin America
The second day of the VII Meeting of the Latin American Pedagogical Movement began with panel entitled “Freedom Trade as a democratic condition in Latin America.” The participants of the meeting had the opportunity to listen to reports on the situation of public education and the union organizations of the sector in Ecuador, El Salvador and Panama, with exhibitions of UNE/Ecuador, Andes June 21/El Salvador and MPU/Panama.
Andrés Quehpe, president of UNE/Ecuador, presented on trade union and pedagogical actions in times of persecution and criminalization of union action in the Ecuadorian context.
Latin American Pedagogical Movement for Public Education
The defense of public education as a social right is one of the fundamental pillars of the Latin American pedagogical movement, so the meeting included a space to reflect on the articulation of this with the public campaign for the public!
In this panel they presented representatives of Sutep/Peru and Colprosumah/Honduras. Alfredo Velázquez, Secretary of Pedagogical Affairs of SUTEP, shared the “emancipatory pedagogical proposal for transformation”, carried out by SUTEP members in coordination with José Manuel Valverde, consultant of the IEAL.
Luis Daniel Fonseca, president of Colprosumah, shared with the people participating in the meeting the “proposal for the construction of a new educational model”, built within the framework of the Latin American pedagogical movement and presented to political parties in electoral contest in the month of June.
The second day of activities of the meeting continued with work in commissions, in which the participants spoke about resignification of the teaching work, training experiences built with a teaching perspective, mobilization of the basis and strategies of struggle and the pedagogical nature of the educational budget and working conditions.
After the group work space, the commissions presented in plenary the most relevant elements provided by the motivating exhibitions and the dialogues from questions related to each topic.
The VII Regional Meeting of the Latin American Pedagogical Movement concluded on August 23 with a cultural presentation of the magisterial spill dance group. The day after the affiliation of the SUTEP participant of the meeting held a national meeting on union strengthening and gender equality policy.
In the VII meeting of the Latin American pedagogical movement, representatives of CEA, Ctera and Sadop of Argentina participated; CTEUB of Bolivia; CNTE DE BRAZIL; Chile’s syndes; ASPU and FECODE DE COLOMBIA; Ande and SEC of Costa Rica; Unites from Ecuador; Andes June 21, El Salvador; United States AFT; Colpedagogosh and Colprosumah of Honduras; MPU of Panama; OTEP-A and UNE-SN of Paraguay; Sutep of Peru; Fenprof of Portugal; ADP and ANPROTED of the Dominican Republic and Fenapes and FUM-TEP of Uruguay.
In addition to the great logistics and economic contribution for the realization of the event by Sutep and Magisterial spill, the meeting had the solidarity support of sister organizations affiliated with IE in Norway and Sweden: UEN and Sveriges Lärare.
