Landscape in the coldest city in Brazil “freezes” with snow, sylum and thermal sensation of -12 ° C

Urupema landscapes recorded snow and Sincere on the morning of this Saturday (9), when the Third Snow of the Year in Santa Catarina. The city in Serra Santa Catarina, considered the coldest in Brazil, recorded -2 ° C around 6am, the lowest temperature of the day in the state, according to Epagri.

At that same time, the wind recorded at Morro de Urupema was 67 km/h, which raised the thermal sensation to -12 ° C. The place is 1,725 meters of altitude.

Syllus happens when pieces of ice form at suspended points of the trees or roof eaves, resulting from the fog freezing. Snow, also recorded in Santa Catarina this Saturday, occurs when the air temperature is below 0 ° C and there is moisture in the atmosphere, forming ice crystals that clone and fall as flakes.

In addition to Urupema, snow was recorded in São Joaquim and Bom Jardim da Serra, which are also in high places of Serra Catarinense. According to the Civil Defense, there is still a chance of new snow occurrences at the highest points of the Serra over the next few hours, although the tendency is to decrease throughout the day.

Third Snow of the Year

This is the third time that snow in Santa Catarina in 2025. The first time was at dawn on May 29, in Urupemain the Serra Catarinense. On the same day, Bom Jardim da Serra, São Joaquim and Urubici also recorded the phenomenon, confirmed by Epagri and the Civil Defense.

Already the first snow of winter was registered on June 30when the phenomenon was recorded in Urubici, Urpema, São Joaquim and Bom Jardim da Serra. The phenomenon, although confirmed as snow by Epagri, was classified as rain frozen by the Civil Defense.
