Lamborghini is one of the few manufacturers that has not yet launched an electric model in series, or that would not have announced at least that they are at a very advanced stage with the development of one. Rolls-Royce has had one for a long time. Even Ferrari is preparing one, and the interior details, recently revealed, show how much attention and effort have been devoted to that model. But Lamborghini, even if it revealed in 2023 the prototype of the first electric model, named Lanzador, does not have such a model for now. And recently the head of Lamborghini, Stephan Winkelmann, told The Times publication that the brand he leads completely gives up on them, as investing in electric cars can prove to be too expensive a hobby.

In recent years, an increasingly clear trend is taking shape in the automotive world — very wealthy people begin to avoid electric cars after an initial wave of interest, and the reason would be that they no longer seem so special and timeless to last over time and preserve or increase their value. As the head of Bugatti Rimac used to say, the rich are ready to pay hundreds of thousands of euros for a mechanical, analog, skillfully crafted watch, but they will never pay the same amount for an electronic watch, even if the latter may be more accurate, faster or more multifunctional.

In the last year, even the Rolls-Royce Spectre, the model that seemed to be an exception to this trend, considerably reduced its sales. Even the head of Rolls-Royce, xddd, recently said that the wealthiest buyers are hesitant to buy the brand’s electric model and are looking for the V12 combustion engine.

And in the context in which the EU canceled its total ban on combustion engines, from 2035, and the USA canceled almost any possible emission restriction, the cars in Lamborghini’s hierarchical segment don’t really have many reasons to go electric.

Therefore, the head of Lamborghini is now saying something that sounds amazing, but was somewhat expected in the context of the evolution of the last year. Stephan Winkelmann says Lamborghini owners and buyers have little desire to switch to electric cars and give up the sound and feel of a V8 or V12.

However, he admits that making such a decision took a lot and there were countless internal debates on the subject. But finally, after internal discussions, meetings with dealers and Lamborghini owners, the company decided to cancel all plans to develop and launch an electric model.

“You know, in such a context, the development of an electric car can turn out to be too expensive a hobby. We would willingly accept the risk of huge investments with the clear prospect of never recovering those investments. It would be financially irresponsible on our part to do so, and we would all be subjecting ourselves to undeserved risks – both the shareholders, and the workers in the factories, and all those who carry the spirit of Lamborghini forward,” says the head of the Italian brand.

However, he says the Lanzador will eventually hit the market as a plug-in hybrid model. And the future Urus will have such a propulsion system, he says.

So the Lamborghini boss doesn’t seem at all impressed by the plans of rivals Ferrari, who have hired a former Apple designer to develop the interior of their first electric model, the Ferrari Luce, and he has created one of the most beautiful interiors on an electric car. Even if Ferrari seems very determined to make a maximum effort, Lamborghini has chosen not to follow its path and remain faithful to combustion engines, possibly integrated into plug-in hybrid systems.

It’s just that these systems also cut from the old spirit of Lamborghini, which had light cars of 1,300-1,600 kg, with V12 engines. Now plug-in hybrid models already reach 2,000 km, even those that are not SUVs. But at least it still retains the mechanical sound of an engine with magnificent architecture.
