A Mysterious Death at Lake Mead
The case of Lake Mead Maeve has remained shrouded in mystery since her remains were discovered in a shallow grave near an unnamed cove within Lake Mead Recreational Park, which borders Las Vegas, in October 1981. Investigators believe she died from blunt force trauma a few months before her remains were found.
Beyond Time: Genetic Advancements Provide Clues
Recent advancements in genetic testing have shed new light on the case. Scientists, using DNA samples already available in U.S. databases, found a genetic match. The results suggest Maeve was part of the first generation of Irish immigrants, with her closest known genetic relative being James Dundon, born in Ireland in 1825.
This new clue points to the Dundon family line as a starting point in identifying Maeve’s identity.
The Search for Answers
Investigator Lori Miller of the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office is keen to expand the search through genealogical means. She is urging distant relatives of the Dundon family to come forward with any information about a female relative who was in the United States around 1980-1981, specifically in the wider Southwest region including Arizona, Nevada, and California.
Additionally, Miller is reaching out to family members for DNA samples to further assist the investigation.
Physical Description and Clothing
Maeve was described as a white woman, approximately 30 to 50 years old, standing 5’2” tall, with medium-length brown hair. She was of medium build and was four months pregnant with a baby girl at the time of her death.
In terms of clothing, Maeve was wearing black or dark blue polyester slacks, a beige or light brown knit top, blue floral underwear, and was adorned with a yellow metal crucifix necklace and a yellow metal ring that had lost its stone. The condition of her teeth, reported as excellent, suggests she was not living a transient lifestyle.
The Case Moves Forward
To piece together the events leading to Maeve’s death, investigators are eager to identify her. They hope that once her identity is established, they can determine who last saw her, identify a motive, and uncover the reasoning behind her abandonment.
Entire Community Needed in the Investigation
The investigation is not just about finding out who Maeve was; it’s about justice and closure. Investigators believe that by identifying Maeve, they can also locate her child and provide answers to the parent of a child who disappeared 42 years ago.
Maeve’s fingerprints did not yield any results, and her description does not match anyone who has been reported missing in the United States.
Investigator Miller emphasizes the importance of community involvement in her case. “We are trying to identify her to find out who saw her last and work from there to find a motive for her death and why she was killed and discarded the way in which she was,” says Miller.
