La Laguna Schools: Shift to Online Classes – 7 Schools Affected

Torreón, Coahuila.- The Coordinator of Educational Services in the Laguna Region, Flor Estela Rentería Medina, reported that security anomalies or omissions have been identified in 60 schools in the region, following the reviews initiated after the death of the minor Anuel Esquivel Cruz, aged six, which occurred on October 22, 2025 at the Cuauhtémoc Federal Primary School in the San Miguel ejido, municipality of San Pedro de las Colonias, where a pillar collapsed. metal roof during a physical education class.

Rentería Medina explained that these reviews cover approximately 450 campuses, of which 15 percent have incidents related to roofs, fences, unused structures or constructions without the required safety protocols.

He noted that seven campuses, including the school where the incident occurred, maintain their activities in remote mode, while the rest continue in face-to-face classes with cordoned off areas and precautionary measures dictated by Civil Protection.

He indicated that, by instruction of Governor Manolo Jiménez Salinas, working groups were established with the Secretary of Education, Emmanuel Garza; Undersecretary Ignacio Castillo; the teacher Hugo Lozano; federal authorities; and the national coordination of the La Escuela es Nuestra program, in addition to the ICIFED (Coahuilense Institute of Educational Physical Infrastructure), with the objective of reviewing, reinforcing or safely completing existing works, especially unfinished roofs or roofs with structural damage.

The official stated that in the schools where greater risks were detected, it was decided to suspend in-person activities, while in the others recommendations were issued and attention is maintained for students, parents and teaching staff. The reviews began in October and will continue until all campuses in the region are covered.
