West Des Moines City Council has unanimously approved site plans for the city’s first Kwik Star convenience store. It will be located along Westown Parkway across from Valley West Mall. Despite concerns from a nearby local business owner about increased competition and traffic, at its meeting this week, the council emphasized that no city funding or incentives have been provided for the project. Ward Two Councilmember Greg Hudson addressed these concerns, saying, “While I do understand things that I’ve heard about… if we have an applicant that is fulfilling all the requirements for a commercially zoned district, I don’t know if we can be in a place to deny an applicant for very, very specific reasons that there’s another business.” This will be the first Kwik Star in West Des Moines. The City Council sees the new development as part of the area’s revitalization efforts.
