Safeguarding Cattle and Livelihoods in Kwango Province
A significant vaccination campaign has commenced in Kenge, the capital of Kwango province, Democratic Republic of Congo, targeting the pervasive threats of bovine pasteurellosis and symptomatic anthrax (also known as symptomatic coal). this initiative aims to protect the region’s cattle population, especially in the Feshi and Kasongolunda territories, which have been disproportionately affected by these diseases.
Aspiring Goals and Ample Resources
The campaign aims to reach 28,257 head of cattle across the targeted territories. With over 90,000 vaccine doses available, authorities are determined to curb the spread of these diseases, which have seen a decline since 2017 but still pose a significant risk to the region’s livestock and economy. The availability of sufficient vaccine doses is crucial, especially considering the logistical challenges often faced in reaching remote areas within the DRC.
Government Commitment and Free Vaccination
jean-Pierre Tsimanga Buana, the National Minister of Fisheries and breeding, officially inaugurated the campaign, emphasizing its free nature and its critical role in preserving the economic stability of local breeders. The Minister urged breeders to actively participate by allowing vaccinators access to their farms, highlighting the importance of collective action in eradicating these zoonotic diseases.
We will transform the Kwango by giving it its letters of nobility in breeding… vaccination is free. I invite you, breeders, to open your farms to vaccinators so that we can end these zoonoses.Jean-Pierre Tsimanga Buana, National Minister for Fisheries and breeding
Economic Impact and Historical Losses
Between 2017 and 2020, Kwango province witnessed the loss of 20,969 cattle due to these diseases, according to provincial statistics. This decimation has had a profound negative impact on the local economy, contributing to poverty and food insecurity. The agricultural sector in the DRC, particularly livestock farming, is vital for rural livelihoods and food security. Outbreaks of diseases like pasteurellosis and symptomatic anthrax can devastate entire communities, leading to significant economic hardship.
Kwango’s Untapped Potential
Despite the challenges, Kwango province, strategically located as a gateway to Kinshasa, possesses significant agro-pastoral potential. With 6,347,230 hectares of arable land, the province currently utilizes only 10% of its agricultural resources. Investing in livestock health and agricultural development could unlock significant economic opportunities for the region, improving livelihoods and contributing to national food security. For example, improved cattle health could lead to increased milk and meat production, boosting local markets and creating employment opportunities.
