Ukrainian Forces Probe Border Defenses in Kursk

Reports from various sources, including Russian Z-bloggers and Telegram channels monitoring the conflict, indicate a renewed push by Ukrainian armed forces (APU) into Russia’s Kursk region. The focus of these operations appears to be the Glushkovsky district, specifically near the village of Tetkino, situated close to the border. Some reports suggest a secondary thrust southeast towards Novy Put.

These actions follow a pattern of cross-border activity that has intensified in recent months, raising concerns about the stability of the border region. While details remain fluid and official confirmation is pending from some sources, the reports suggest a coordinated effort to test Russian defenses and perhaps establish a foothold within Russian territory.

bridge Destroyed, Engineering Vehicles Targeted

Initial reports suggest that infrastructure has been impacted by the recent fighting. the bridge spanning the Sejm River near the village of Zvannoy has reportedly been destroyed. Furthermore, Telegram channels allege that russian forces have targeted Ukrainian engineering vehicles and other equipment involved in the operation.

Independent military analyst Yana Matveev, writing on the Telegram channel “Maps and Arrows,” described the Ukrainian forces as operating in small mechanized groups. Matveev noted, Once again, engineering vehicles are ahead, there is also infantry on light ATVs.

Drone Activity Intensifies, Casualties Reported

Local sources have reported a surge in Ukrainian drone activity over Russian territory, suggesting an effort to gather intelligence and potentially conduct targeted strikes. The acting governor of the Kursk region, Alexander Khinshtein, has yet to officially acknowledge the incursion by Ukrainian forces. However, he did confirm the deaths of three individuals resulting from drone attacks. According to Khinshtein, two fatalities occurred near the village of Tshawnalek in the Belovsky district, while another occurred in a village within the Glushkovsky district. These locations align with areas identified by Z-bloggers as sites of active fighting.

The use of drones has become a prominent feature of the conflict, with both sides employing unmanned aerial vehicles for reconnaissance, surveillance, and attack missions. According to a recent report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), drone warfare has substantially altered the dynamics of modern conflict, enabling smaller units to conduct operations with greater precision and lethality.

Ukraine Claims Strike on UAV Control Point

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has stated that on May 4th, its air forces conducted a strike on a control point for UAV units located near Tetkino in the Kursk region. According to the Ukrainian military, this point served as a base for reconnaissance and strike drone crews. The strike reportedly resulted in the liquidation of up to 20 occupiers and the destruction of their equipment.

This claim highlights the strategic importance of UAV control points in the ongoing conflict and underscores the efforts by both sides to disrupt the other’s drone operations.

Background: Previous Incursions and Contested Territories

The current clashes follow a previous incursion into the Kursk region that began in August 2024. During that operation, Ukrainian forces reportedly occupied several border territories, including the Sudzha district center. It wasn’t until late April 2025 that the head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia, Valery Gerasimov, reported to President Vladimir Putin that the operation to liberate the Kursk region was complete, with the last settlement, Gornal, allegedly retaken on April 26th.

However, the ukrainian military has not confirmed a full withdrawal from the Kursk region. the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has described the situation in the Kursk border area as complex, stating that individual units continue to hold certain positions and fulfill the assigned tasks. This ambiguity suggests that pockets of resistance or forward operating positions may still exist within the region, contributing to the ongoing tensions and clashes.
