Will the Kurds Find a Place in a Post-Assad Syria?
The fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad marks a pivotal moment for the Kurds, the country’s largest minority group. While the jihadi rebels who toppled Assad claim to aspire to a unified and inclusive Syria, the Kurds face a perilous journey towards securing a place in this new order.
For years, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have carved out an autonomous region in northeast Syria, partnering with the U.S. to dismantle ISIS and hold back various armed factions. This success, however, hinges on continued U.S. support. This support, however, could be in jeopardy under the Biden administration, which promises to reassess and potentially reduce its military presence in the region.
Turkey’s Animosity Towards the Kurds
Adding to the complexities, the new Syrian government is closely allied with Turkey, a longstanding adversary of the Kurds. Turkey views the SDF as an extension of the Kurdish insurgency within its own borders, labeling them terrorists and vowing to prevent their presence in the new Syria. Their Turkish-backed forces have already clashed with the Kurds, pushing them further into a precarious position.
Despite overtures from the new Syrian leadership, the Kurds remain wary. The rebels’ violent expulsion of Kurdish fighters from Deir al-Zour and their takeover of the town of Manbij underscore the potential for renewed conflict.
A Fragile Hope
There is a glimmer of hope in the form of early signals from the new Syrian leadership, who have so far refrained from targeting the SDF directly. However, the promise of coexistence remains fragile, hinging on unpredictable factors and the evolving political landscape.
The Kurds’ future in Syria remains uncertain, but their story is crucial to understanding the intricate tapestry of the Syrian conflict. Their quest for autonomy and recognition in a region rife with violence and political maneuverings will continue to shape the country’s trajectory for years to come.
