SNL50: Kristen Wiig Brings Back Dooneese in Classic Maharells Sketch
On the eve of Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary, the late-night comedy show transported viewers back to the zany antics of its first decade. Among the nostalgic highlights of the special was Kristen Wiig’s portrayal of Dooneese, her iconic character from the Maharells ensemble.
Kristen Wiig Revives Dooneese in SNL’s Maharells Sketch
Wiig and a team of comedic legends brought the Maharells to life on the opening sketch of the SNL50: The Anniversary Special. Wiig portrayed Dooneese, alongside Fred Armisen as the charismatic host Lawrence Welk, Will Ferrell as the crooner Robert Goulet, and the dynamic trio of Scarlett Johansson, Kim Kardashian, and Ana Gasteyer as Janice, Holly, and Margaret, respectively.
Will Ferrell Performs in a Priceless Moment
The sketch began with a modern twist: Will Ferrell arrived on stage riding a Vespa with an attached sidecar. He immediately engaged the audience with a catchy song, seamlessly sliding into a scat-filled performance that drew enthusiastic laughter from the live crowd at Rockefeller Center.
Ferrell quipped with classic wit, “Oh my god. Did they put LSD in my Caesar salad, or do I see three beautiful ladies hitchhiking my way?” As he made his way to his fellow singers, the scene morphed into a throwback to the Maharells’ debut on the show in 1976 with a musical number introducing the sisters.
Enter Dooneese: The Iconic Character Returns
The highlight of the sequence was the re-debut of Wiig’s Dooneese, who sat in the sidecar of Ferrell’s Vespa, honking its horn with her signature tiny hands. Throughout the performance, Dooneese’s antics remained as unpredictable and delightful as ever.
In a skit where the Maharells sisters tried to win Robert Goulet’s affection, Dooneese brought a unique flair, singing and making physical jests with the other performers. She licked her tiny hands, stroked Johansson’s face, tapped Gasteyer’s chest, and pretended to play the drums on Kardashian’s rear.
A Laughable Exchange
Wiig delivered a standout performance with one of Dooneese’s nonsensical songs, adding to the sketch’s absurdity. She sang, “I put a bird in my mouth and I went to the movies. Then I laughed at the movie and the bird flew out, but the bird choked on popcorn and I gave it CPR. And the bird flew away, but I caught it and ate it raw. Is that bad?”
Ferrell’s comedic timing and slapstick humor added to the hilarity as he responded, “Wow, and to think I almost picked Kim Kardashian.”
