Kremlin’s Crackdown on Non-Russian Nationalism Backfires
Moscow’s heavy-handed approach inadvertently strengthens minority groups.

Mounting pressure from Moscow on expressions of non-russian nationalism is paradoxically fueling solidarity among immigrant communities and indigenous populations. Instead of quelling dissent, the Kremlin’s increasingly repressive measures are galvanizing these groups, pushing them to intensify their activism and devise novel strategies to pursue their objectives.
While certain government tactics have yielded some results, the overall failure to suppress non-Russian nationalism has led the kremlin to escalate its methods. Should this repression of ethnic minorities reach a point where it adversely affects society at large-reminiscent of the era under Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and an increasingly plausible scenario under russian President Vladimir Putin-the challenge posed by non-Russian nationalism to Moscow will only intensify.
Currently, proponents of a more conciliatory approach appear to lack influence among key decision-makers within the Kremlin. Shaped by the events surrounding the Soviet Union’s collapse, Putin and his inner circle remain convinced that heightened repression is the key to quashing non-Russian nationalism, despite past evidence suggesting otherwise. They fear that any sign of leniency would be interpreted as a victory by non-Russian groups, emboldening them to escalate their demands from decentralization to outright independence. However, this strategy of continuous repression merely postpones, rather than resolves, the underlying issues. Any perceived “victories”
