Korobosea Snooker: Community Embraces Cue Sport

WHILE most residents of Moresby South and the National Capital District are drawn to rugby league, soccer, volleyball, basketball, and netball, the Korobosea Ward 3B community has embraced something different – a pool (snooker) competition.

The Korobosea Mini Snooker Competition, a community initiative led by Nelson David, brought together youths and families during the Christmas season, offering a positive outlet and fostering unity.

David explained the motivation behind the event: “Pool or snooker is a popular sport that many people enjoy for fun or gambling. I’ve seen growing interest among youths and adults in my community, so I decided to start a competition.

“So far, the outcome has been really good. We’ve discovered a lot of hidden talents, showing that people at the community level have the skills to compete in bigger tournaments.”

The inaugural season featured 16 teams in an open mixed division, with each side playing against all others across 15 regular rounds and three finals.

After a competitive campaign, Poison Mioks and Middle Street secured their places in the grand final, while Three Kona and Landslide will contest third place.

Looking ahead, David confirmed plans to expand the competition: “We are planning to invite neighbouring wards for the second season and beyond.”

The initiative has received strong backing from local leaders, including Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko and NCD Governor Powers Parkop, underscoring its potential to grow into a wider community sporting event.
