Changing Health Trends in South Korea: Cataracts Overtake Newborn Illnesses

An aging population and declining birth rates are reshaping the healthcare landscape in South Korea, with a notable shift in the most prevalent health issues requiring medical attention.

South Korea is experiencing a demographic shift that is considerably impacting its healthcare trends. A decade ago, the most common reason for hospitalization was newborn-related ailments. However, recent data indicates that elderly cataracts have now become the leading cause for hospital visits.

Increase in Cataract Cases

According to the latest health statistics from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, “old cataract” cases have surged, representing the highest number of patients receiving health insurance benefits.Cataracts, an ophthalmological condition characterized by the clouding of the lens, leading to blurred vision, saw a 5.4% increase from the previous year, affecting 32,61 more individuals.

Following elderly cataract, the most common reasons for hospitalization included pneumonia of unknown origin (30,8287 cases), gastroenteritis of infectious or unknown origin (24,4125 cases), and intervertebral disc disorders (22,212 cases).

Decline in Newborn-Related Hospitalizations

In 2014, newborn-related illnesses accounted for 37,3597 hospitalizations, ranking as the most frequent reason for inpatient care. By last year, this number had decreased to 20,7398, placing it fifth overall. Conversely,hospitalizations for elderly cataracts,which ranked third in 2014 with 25,1008 cases,have risen to the top spot. Overall hospitalizations for newborn related issues dropped from 430,000 to approximately 240,000, reflecting the contry’s declining birth rate and rapidly aging population.

The highest medical expenditure covered by health insurance for hospitalizations was 1,869.4 billion won for Alzheimer’s dementia, followed by cerebral infarction, pneumonia, and knee joint issues.

For outpatient care, gingivitis and periodontal disease remained the most common reason for seeking medical attention, with 19.59 million patients visiting hospitals for these conditions. Periodontal disease also accounted for the highest total outpatient medical expenses.Other frequent reasons for outpatient visits included acute bronchitis (1760,4128 cases), vasomotor and allergic rhinitis (740,701 cases), and essential hypertension (732,9913 cases).
