Kongsberg Weapon Stations: Global Adoption & Standardisation

Germany and Sweden are to equip their new 6×6 armored vehicles with remote-controlled weapon stations from Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace.

Swedish and German armored vehicles are equipped with weapon systems from Kongsberg.

This is revealed in a press release from Kongsberg on Friday 6 February.

Protector RS-4

  • Remote controlled weapon station that is mounted on armored vehicles.

  • Operated from inside the carriage with cameras and sensors, so that the crew can shoot without exposing themselves.

  • Has integrated sensors and can be used with various types of weapons.

  • Can be upgraded with a function against drones (Counter-UAS).

The new agreement has been concluded with Finnish Patria, which builds the armored vehicles. Kongsberg will deliver several hundred weapon stations of the type Protector RS4.

The contract is worth around 140 million euros, and there are options for more orders later.

A remote-controlled weapon station allows the soldiers to operate the weapon from inside the vehicle, instead of standing up in a hatch.

It has a day camera and thermal sight that is controlled from a console.

Kongsberg states that the RS4 solution is an updated version of the Nordic configuration, with integrated sensors and support for several weapon types. The system can also be expanded with functions to combat drones.

International cooperation

The investment is part of the CAVS program – a collaboration where several countries come together to use a common type of armour 6×6 vehicle.
