🔶DATELINELOCATION – Klarna‘s CEO, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, has expressed strong views on the capabilities of artificial intelligence, even suggesting it could potentially perform all jobs. Though, Klarna’s new AI chatbot presents a more tempered perspective.
The Swedish fintech company, known for its “buy now, pay later” service, has launched an AI version of Siemiatkowski to provide customer support. The AI hotline is now available in the US and Sweden.
A test call to the US hotline revealed that the AI chatbot could explain purchasing power and elaborate on Siemiatkowski’s views on AI, while also offering a more moderate outlook on AI’s impact on the workforce.
Siemiatkowski has been a vocal advocate for AI, and Klarna is actively experimenting with the technology. The company reports that 96% of its employees use AI daily.
In a January X post, Siemiatkowski stated, “AI is capable of doing all our jobs my own included,” citing its reasoning capabilities.
He elaborated that “Our work is simply reasoning combined with knowledge/experience. And the most critical breakthrough, reasoning, is behind us.”
In May,Siemiatkowski used an AI doppelganger to present Klarna’s quarterly earnings report. He also noted that Klarna’s “AI-first strategy” is driving positive results, including increased revenue per employee, cost reductions, and merchant network expansion.
Despite Siemiatkowski’s enthusiasm, the AI chatbot acknowledges limitations:
The AI chatbot did not specify which roles at Klarna would remain human-led,but emphasized the need for a “human touch.”
In February 2024, Klarna announced that its AI customer service agents were performing the equivalent work of 700 full-time employees.
Siemiatkowski (the human) mentioned on the “Grit” podcast in October that Klarna had largely “stopped hiring due to AI,” while continuing to recruit engineers.
Addressing concerns about job displacement, Siemiatkowski’s AI offered this perspective:
The AI Siemiatkowski chatbot remained focused on Klarna-related topics, declining to comment on unrelated matters.
“I understand your point, but my focus is strictly on Klarna’s products and gathering customer feedback,” the bot said. “I’m here to hear about your experiences with Klarna and how we can make things even better for you.”
A fair point from AI Siemiatkowski.
