The killer whales again began to dip yachts near Spain
The whales again attacked yachts off the coast of Spain, Independent reported. The incidents occurred in the area of Grove in the Gibraltar Strait within a few minutes one after the other.
A pair of whales, one of which was about seven meters long, deliberately began to hit the boats. “We felt two powerful blows, and when we looked in the water, we saw two killer whales and a completely destroyed rudder,” said the captain of the Yacht San Pedro.
A member of the crew of the second damaged ship admitted: “We were really horrified when we realized that the whales were deliberately hitting the hull.”
After the second attack, a stew leak appeared and she began to absorb water. The maritime rescue service boats urgently pulled both ships to the harbor.
Since May 2020, more than 500 similar incidents have been reported near the Iberian Peninsula. Experts are particularly concerned that the behavior of the killer whales has apparently changed – they have begun to target the steering mechanisms in purpose, demonstrating an unusual coordination of actions.
Leading naval biologist Alex Zerbini, chairman of the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Committee, believes that this behavior is a “new tradition” of whales or a “temporary strangeness”, which has no obvious adaptive purpose.
The Spanish authorities have strengthened coastal waters monitoring and recommended that yachts avoid areas where the attacks were registered. Sailors are advised to follow the rules of behavior when encountering killer killers: to immediately stop the vessel, to turn off the engine and not to show aggression. (BGNES)
