Las reusable bottles They are a sustainable alternative to single-use plastic. Whether they are made of glass, stainless steel or any other material, it is important maintain proper cleanliness of these bottles that we use daily at work or the gym. The anesthetist David Callejo has recently warned about this matter on social networks.
“Do you have a bottle at home or at work that you just rinse a little before using? Well, you’re drinking water with many more bacteria than your toilet“commented the scientific communicator.
Although “for many people, reusable bottles are washed by rinsing them a little before using them,” that it wouldn’t be the right way to disinfect them.
“I have very bad news: if you do that, you are drinking water with forty thousand times more bacteria than your toilet seat“he continues.
This is explained by a combination of factors such as humidity. “In the bottle you have 100% humiditygood temperature and every time you drink from the nose you contribute epithelial cells, saliva and food debris that feed your bacteria farm,” he says.
Furthermore, “these bacteria are going to stick to the walls and just rinsing won’t work,” he warns. This leads to “a authentic bacterial ecosystemand the bacteria that grow are gram-negative, the same ones you have in your stool and can cause gastroenteritis, digestive problems or bad breathamong many other things,” he clarifies.
To prevent this bacterial accumulation from occurring and to be able to use the bottles without health risks, the doctor recommends do two things: “One, choose glass or steel bottles, fewer bacteria grow in these materials. And two, you have to wash them daily with soap, as if it were just another plate or fork. Ideally, it should be in the dishwasher,” he concludes.
