The Chagas disease, also known as Kissing Bug Disease, has gained importance in the USA after being classified as endemic by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This disease is caused by the parasite trypanosoma cruzi, which occurs in the excrement of the triatoma bug, colloquially known as Kissing Bug. The name stems from the fact that this insect bite is often on the face.

The transmission takes place when the Kissing bug bites a host that carries the parasite and get the infected excrement into open wounds, eyes or mouth. Although rare, the disease can also be transferred from the mother to the child or by contaminated blood transfusions. In the United States, not imported cases were found in eight states, including Arizona, Arkansas and Texas, which means that the infection within the country was acquired.

The disease is widespread in 32 states, especially in the south of the United States. The Kissing Bug Community Science program of Texas A & M University has received about 10,000 reports of these insects, of which around 50% were tested positively for parasites. The exact number of sick people is unknown because the disease is not subject to reporting, which means that doctors do not have to report on health authorities.

Chagas runs in two phases. The acute phase occurs in the first weeks or months after the infection and can be accompanied by symptoms or with mild symptoms such as fever and fatigue. If left untreated, the disease can become chronic and serious health problems such as heart failure can cause. Treatment takes place with anti -parasitic medication, with early treatment in the acute phase most effective.

In order to protect yourself from the Kissing bug, it is recommended to use insecticides, wear clothes that cover the skin and to avoid eating raw vegetables and unpeeled fruit. Pets should also be treated with anti-flea and anti-tick medication in order to minimize the risk of transmission.
