“It will be a big and ambitious premiere and we hope it can continue throughout Christmas”says Eduardo Escudero, one of the founders of the Catalan distributor and production company A Contracorriente Films, responsible for the exhibition of this film, which can be seen dubbed in the Catalan language in 27 movie theaters in different cities throughout Catalonia.
Starring Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, Pierce Brosnan, Roman Griffin Davis, Forest Whitaker, Ben Kingsley and Oscar Isaac, The King of Kings is loosely inspired by the children’s book The Life of Our Lord, by Charles Dickens.with Bible fragments from the epistles of Matthew and Luke taken from the New Testament.
The Life of Our Lord could not be published until the early 1930s by order of Dickens, who authorized its distribution only after the death of the last of his sons. “This was so because it was an intimate story, a story with which the writer narrated the life of Jesus to his children in an accessible way“, friendly and, above all, very entertaining,” explains Escudero, convinced that Advent is “an unbeatable time to bring this film that celebrates the nativity to theaters.”
The King of Kings was released in the United States by Angel Studios on April 11, 2025. Since then it has passed through dozens of countries before arriving in Catalonia. One of the latest has been Portugal, where, according to Escudero, it has worked well. “We hope that the same thing happens here and that all Christian communities and the general public can enjoy it. It is the greatest story that has ever been told; it will appeal to adults and young people and to anyone with a certain curiosity,” concludes the head of A Contracorriente.
