South Korean and Western intelligence agencies first reported that Pyongyang had sent thousands of troops to fight on Moscow’s side in the war against Ukraine. In April, North Korea confirmed that its military personnel were deployed in support of the Russian military campaign, and that some of them had been killed in the hostilities.
In early December, Pyongyang acknowledged that in August it had sent military personnel to clear mines in the Kursk region, near the border with Ukraine. At least nine servicemen were killed during the 120-day deployment, Kim said in a Dec. 12 speech upon the troop’s return.
Kim’s New Year’s greeting was sent two days after he himself received a greeting from Putin, Reuters recalled.
