Although this type of model still has difficulty selling, Kia is not abandoning the sports electric car niche. After its EV6 GT, the first of its kind for the Korean brand, and the recent EV9 GT, two other models are in preparation.
While moving cautiously into the electric market, Kia recently moved into second place. In recent months, the Korean brand has increased its number of new products and announcements. The recent EV3 and EV4 will even be entitled to sporty GT versions. These will be launched next year. Here’s what we know.
Electric and sporty: Kia still believes in this combination
Several brands have noticed that electric and sportiness do not always go well together. Not from a technical point of view, several models are also real successes. No, it’s more the sales that are failing. If sales of battery vehicles are doing relatively well, those of electric sports cars are not really taking off. The demand for this type of model is still too low.
However, this phenomenon does not seem to discourage Kia. The Korean brand has just announced a future sporty version of its recent EV4. According to the British media Autocar, the small crossover EV3 would also be entitled to the same treatment. While the competition is particularly cautious in this niche, Kia is going in with both feet!
The manufacturer would thus have a total of four electric sports models in its range. The future EV3 GT and EV4 GT will therefore join the EV6 GT (recently restyled) and EV9 GT. An ultra-comprehensive offer, perhaps the broadest currently offered on the market.
Kia has just revealed the first photos of its EV4 GT.
A taste to keep the public waiting
Very little is known about the EV3 GT. Kia, on the other hand, will launch its future EV4 GT next year. To keep the public waiting, the brand has already published a series of images of its next sports model. Of course, camouflage is still required. A skin specifically designed for the supercharged compact, by the way…
These photos don’t allow you to distinguish much, unfortunately. We simply note new rims, hiding brake calipers finished in yellow. Visually, the EV4 GT should remain quite close to the GT-Line finish, already benefiting from a sportier treatment.
On the technical side, Kia will add a second electric unit on the rear axle. The EV4 GT will therefore distribute its power to all four wheels. Power which, according to first estimates, should gravitate around 400 horsepower. This version should also include the large 81.4 kWh battery. The autonomy should decrease slightly, due to the extra power. When it arrives on the market next year, the sports compact will go up against the Volkswagen ID.3 GTX and Cupra Born VZ.
