The card is issued as an authentic document with legal backing which can be used in lieu of birth certificate and can be used for state government related services and other social needs.
Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in a press conference that the cabinet meeting has approved in principle the issue of permanent nativity card with photograph instead of the current nativity certificate in the state. The card is issued as an authentic document with legal backing which can be used in lieu of birth certificate and can be used for state government related services and other social purposes.
“The plight of the people to prove their existence is worrisome. One should be able to easily prove to anyone that he is born and living in this country or is a permanent resident. No one should be left out. An authentic and legally binding document should be in possession of that person. The government intends to implement such a document in Kerala’- said the Chief Minister.
A birth certificate is a document that proves a person’s birth and long-term residence in a state. However, it is not a legally binding document. At present birth certificate has to be purchased multiple times for each requirement. This matter is before the government as a complaint. There has also been a constant request of the people in this regard. With the arrival of the card, these problems will be solved. The Chief Minister also said that the draft of the law to give legal effect to the nativity card has been entrusted to the revenue department to consult with the law department and submit it for the consideration of the cabinet.
The card can be used as a beneficiary identification document for government services. Tehsildars will be responsible for distribution of cards.
Summary: During a press conference, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that the Cabinet has given in-principle approval to issue permanent, photo-affixed Nativity Cards in place of the nativity certificates currently issued in the state. The card will serve as an authoritative document with legal backing, which can be used permanently for state government-related services and other social requirements as a substitute for the traditional nativity certificate.
