Kenia Enriquez: Boxing Champ Joins Combate Global MMA

by Archynetys Sports Desk

Kenia Enriquez is looking for a fight while her boxing career remains unanswered.

Rather than waiting for a title defense, the WBC interim champion of the fly weights plans to add an MMA belt to her record. Nicknamed “the Mexican Queen”, Enriquez (28-1, 11 Kos) signed a promotional contract for several fights with the organization of MMA Combate Global, it was announced on Tuesday.

Like Claressa Shields, Amanda Serrano and Savannah Marshall in recent years, Enriquez (1-0 in MMA) has passed to mixed martial arts. She must face Hannah Brobyskov (0-1) on July 17 during a combat event in Miami.

Enriquez seeks to remain active as she is impatiently awaiting the opportunity to face the undisputed champion of the Gabriela Fundora fly weights, elected “boxer of the year 2024” by The Ring.

Aged 31, Enriquez, from Tijuana in Mexico, has not fought in boxing since February 2024, when she defended her interim WBC belt against Maria Salinas. She had won this title by beating Ibeth Zamora Silva in September 2023. Enriquez also owned the secondary WBO drive weights in 2014 as well as the WBC half-1-1-day WBC title from 2018 to 2020.

“We welcome Kenia Enriquez, an incredible athlete, within Combate, and we condemn the lack of respect that WBC has shown him,” said CEO of Combate Global, Campbell McLaren. “We will raise his career in MMA in the same way that we have released Amanda Serrano from anonymity in boxing, considerably increasing his notoriety until attracting the attention of Jake Paul. »»

Serrano already had 36 fights in his boxing career and was world champion in several categories when she made her debut in MMA in 2018 under the Combate banner.

While female boxing continues to flourish, stars like Serrano (2-0-1), Shields (2-1) and Marshall (1-0) remain little committed to pursuing their careers in MMA. Enriquez made his debut in MMA on March 13, beating Hayley Valentine by unanimous decision during a combat event.
