Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s Grand National Tour Concludes with Triumphant L.A. Homecoming

The dynamic duo delivers a high-energy, collaborative performance at SoFi Stadium, showcasing their individual talents and undeniable chemistry.

“los Angeles, Cali-motherfucking-fornia!”

With that spirited declaration, followed by a shout-out to local neighborhoods, Kendrick Lamar made it clear how thrilled he was to be back in L.A. And rightfully so.After weeks of touring, Lamar and his frequent collaborator SZA’s co-headlining Grand National Tour culminated in three sold-out nights at SoFi Stadium, their hometown’s largest venue. Following a year of remarkable success for both artists-Billboard hits, Grammys, film appearances, celebrated victories, and a Super Bowl performance-this homecoming show could have easily been a mere formality. Though, the two artists took to the stage with a palpable hunger, delivering a captivating performance that lasted nearly three hours.

As holographic graffiti appeared on a simulated “concrete wall” onstage,Kendrick Lamar launched the evening by emerging from a Buick Grand National,a nod to his recent album. He began with “wacced out murals” (from 2024’s GNX), and by the second verse, the stage was engulfed in both verbal and literal flames. He maintained this initial intensity throughout, delivering a relentless stream of verses from nearly every track on the album, along with numerous hits from his previous works. Kendrick Lamar’s raw energy, amplified by striking lighting, set the stage for an electrifying night.

SZA initially joined Lamar for “30 for 30,” but after he exited, the video screen’s wall began to crack and crumble, revealing vibrant and inviting natural scenes. The stadium’s atmosphere shifted as her video displays evolved into increasingly fantastical garden landscapes, creating the illusion of shrinking the audience to the size of ants. To further emphasize this concept, SZA later rode a mechanical ant. Her relaxed grooves provided a calming contrast, yet the energy remained high. She moved with joyful ease, both metaphorically during an engaging rendition of “What Do I do” and literally as she soared through the air with butterfly wings and a harness during “Nobody Gets Me.”

This alternating format defined the concert’s structure: Lamar would perform approximately six songs, followed by SZA with a similar set. The seamless integration of their performances, devoid of any apparent ego,was a refreshing departure from typical co-headlining shows. This approach proved highly effective, creating a dynamic flow that kept the audience engaged. Despite the show’s considerable length, the expertly curated setlist ensured that the energy never waned.

A Night of Shared Energy and Special guests

“Los Angeles, Cali-motherfucking-fornia!”

As the evening progressed, Lamar and SZA continued to exchange their distinctive vibes. Following one of SZA’s mini-sets, Kendrick Lamar infused luminous colors and a playful group of backup dancers into “HUMBLE.” Similarly, SZA transitioned from soft greens and browns to a deep red, complementing the powerful sensuality of “Consideration.” The night’s structure also allowed for clever setups and payoffs. SZA’s recurring praying mantis imagery gained a darkly humorous context during a soaring performance of her hit “Kill Bill,” while Kendrick lamar transformed his “tv off” into pre and post “MUSTARD!” bookends for the entire concert. Adding to the star power, SZA brought out a special guest, her “best friend for energy and positivity,” lizzo, to perform “Special” together.

While the scale of the event was undeniably grand, it never felt overwhelming or impersonal. Instead, lamar and SZA appeared present and authentic, avoiding any sense of being overly rehearsed. their genuine chemistry was evident in every shared moment on stage. Whether performing their Oscar-nominated duet “All the Stars”-which utilized lights and rising platforms to create a vertical performance-or the tender “LOVE,” the duo fostered a sense of intimacy despite the venue’s size. Their friendship shone through, especially in the short videos interspersed between songs. One video, which resonated strongly with the L.A. crowd, featured the two playfully arguing over gas station snacks, culminating in SZA teasing Lamar for his pronunciation of “chamoy,” exclaiming,”Your fans are Mexican!”
