A Czech Voice Resonates at Cannes
The 78th Cannes Film Festival is set to showcase a compelling narrative from Czech director Zuzana kirchnerová. Her debut feature film, Caravan, has been selected for the esteemed Un certain Regard competition, a category known for spotlighting innovative and visionary filmmakers. This selection marks a meaningful moment for Czech cinema on the international stage.
Un Certain Regard: A Platform for Emerging Talent
Thierry Frémaux announced the selection, confirming that Caravan will vie for a prize within the Un Certain Regard section. This year, the coveted Palme d’Or, the festival’s highest honor, will be contested by 20 films, with six directed by women, reflecting a growing emphasis on female voices in cinema. The Un Certain Regard section, in particular, is celebrated for its focus on unique storytelling and directorial vision, providing a crucial platform for emerging talents like Kirchnerová.
‘Caravan’: A Mother-Son Journey of Transformation
Kirchnerová’s Caravan draws from her personal experiences raising a child with disabilities. The film follows a mother and her disabled son as they embark on a transformative road trip to Italy. This psychological drama delves into the complexities of motherhood, challenges societal taboos surrounding disability, and explores the protagonists’ paths to personal liberation. Road movies, like Caravan, often serve as powerful metaphors for inner journeys and self-finding.
Production and Cast: A Collaborative Effort
Produced by Dagmar Sedláčková of Masterfilm, Caravan is a collaborative effort between the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and italy. The film features a stellar cast, with Anna Geislerová delivering a sensitive portrayal of the mother. Jana Plodková,Juliana Oľhová,and Mario Russo also contribute to the film’s ensemble, adding depth and nuance to the narrative.
Kirchnerová’s History with Cannes
While Caravan marks Kirchnerová’s feature debut at Cannes, she is no stranger to the festival’s recognition. In 2009, her student short film, Midwife, earned her the prestigious Prix De La Cinéfondation, a significant achievement that marked the first and only Czech film to receive this honor. This early success foreshadowed her potential as a filmmaker with a unique and compelling voice.
Kirchnerová’s previous work includes directing and writing several programs for Czech Television, focusing on various social issues. Her time-lapse dock-soap Four in That (2013-2018) chronicled the experiences of four women during pregnancy and early motherhood. Additionally, the cycle five Brave (2018), a collaboration with documentary filmmakers Erika Hníková and Tomáš Bojar, followed five individuals with intellectual disabilities as they transitioned from institutional care to independent living. These projects laid the groundwork for the themes and perspectives explored in Caravan.
A Long-Awaited Return for czech Cinema
The selection of Caravan marks a significant return for Czech cinema to the main program at Cannes. The last Czech film to be featured was Jan Švankmajer’s surrealistic Faust Lesson in 1994. Prior to that, Věra Chytilová’s Fruit of the Tomato Tomato was selected in 1970, highlighting the rarity and importance of Kirchnerová’s achievement.
Producer’s Viewpoint
It is an honor for us to introduce Caravan in Cannes, in a section that highlights author’s voices and sensitive filmmaking approaches. For me personally, Caravan is a film that opens the theme of parenting as it is often not talked about: without idealization, with doubts, desire, and fault.
